What is an Asphalt Shingle?

Made from petroleum, asphalt contains oils that make asphalt shingles easy to work with and highly effective at protecting your roof and home. There are three components that make Asphalt Shingles a superior choice of roofing material.

CMI has built long-term relationships with the world’s leading producers of shingles to ensure that only the highest grades of products are applied to each project. In tandem, CMI checks each consignment to shingles to ensure the quality is consistently high, before starting work.

Reinforcement

Asphalt Shingles start out with an asphalt-coated fiberglass mat as a reinforcing layer. This provides the structural base of the shingle, to which the other raw materials (asphalt and granules) are applied. The reinforcement layer uniquely resists tearing, warping and shrinkage when applied on stable, well-ventilated decks to provide the superior protection and durability modern property owners desire.

Asphalt

During shingle manufacturing, the reinforcement is coated with asphalt to provide the water-resistant layer that protects your roof from the elements. The thickness of this layer of asphalt determines the weight of the shingle.

While the weight of the shingle is a factor in the level of protection provided to your property, other factors such as the granules, manufacturing processes and QC processes are equally important.

Granules

A layer of granule is pressed into the surface of the asphalt. The granules protect the layer of asphalt from the ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Without this layer of protection, the asphalt layer would quickly deteriorate.

Cambridge AR

Architectural Shingles (also known as Double Layer Asphalt Shingles)

These offer a remarkable dimensional thickness and deep, blended shadow bands to simulate the appearance of classic wooden shakes, adding a natural beauty to any home.

The Cambridge shingle is the shingle of choice for homeowners who demand the best in terms of quality, durability and value. Combining an extraordinary shake-like design with superior protection makes it a time-tested favourite. Cambridge shingles are engineered to offer customers more protection and peace of mind with a larger, heavier and more durable shingle. Constructed with two layers of heavyweight fibreglass mat, more asphalt and less filler material, these shingles set the standard by offering a limited lifetime warranty, superior tear strength and resistance to high winds.

  • Heavyweight fibreglass asphalt shingles

  • Architectural shingles

  • Cambridge AR features an algae resistant – Class “A” Fire Resistance Rating*

  • Limited wind warranty coverage up to 110 mph (177 km/h)

*All IKO fiberglass shingles require an approved underlayment when applied on roofs with a slope less than 8/12. Class “A” Fire Resistance Rating is achieved only with the installation of an approved underlayment.
